Andy -

Every time I see TV news from Germany I shudder at the idea that the Polizei still wear long leather coats and peaked caps. They certainly could use an image consultant.

Jokes aside, is there a document or letter or other quotable official statement of this position? You know, if they claim to be the legal successors to the Third Reich, they might find themselves hit by requests to pay damages for, say, the Blitz, or shooting down certain Spitfires, Hurricanes and what not. With a good lawyer (if such a thing exists) the opportunities are endless.
