Hello Cees,

Glad I am not alone in my thinking on this bird.

I think it is truly a bloody shame not to finish off the restoration, I think there is merit to some of the comments made about the IWM giving up on the restoration and not wanting to spend the money on restoring it, they did the nose turret and one engine then threw the towel in, so its not in restored condition and its not in 'as found' condition.

I agree that it is still a solid structure, and that the red covering it has a present is just the protective coating on it.

I am thinking, if Hendon do not want to do it, is it possible that the IWM Duxford team, I think that the Hendon - Cosford crew is not big enough to handle this size of aircraft restoration, but I think the Duxford crew could do it, again, I am sure that because of its history, it would be able to get lottery money to help with the restoration.

Ok, this is getting too long, lets hope that one day someone with power and brains allows this bird to be restored.

Regards,

Will

: I agree,
:
: Seems that every now and then someone (and there are a lot
: of them) wonders why the RAFM have never restored it to i
: ts former glory. I am one of them.
:
: Being an incurable Halifax-fanatic and having seen it many
: times at the RAFM I have also wondered why not restoring
: it to static display (on its wheels that is). The conditio
: n of it is very good (the red colour is only preservative
: not rust or corrosion)with the aluminium skin still bright
: .
: Although there have been many people against this because
: of the everpresent replica vs restoration debate, this is
: the only way to have a true warbird (Tirpitz as you know)a
: s well as being a very early Halifax variant.
:
: In some issues of FlyPast it was mentioned that the only r
: eason for not restoring it was because it wasn't a Lancast
: er and that they didn't want to spend a lot of money on a
: second rate bomber. Same goes actually for the IWM cockpit
: section with a acessible Halifax cockpit while the prized
: Lancaster cockpit is sealed off with perspex.
:
: The battle continues unfortunately, or not.........?
:
: Cheers
