Mosquito seat armour markings

Hopefully someone can provide verification of a potential answer to one of "those questions"!
In our work on HR339-TE758 we have been intrigued by the yellow circles on both sides of the pilot's seat back and the navigator's head armour. Everyone we've asked says they remember them but not what they were there for.
Now I see in the recent work on RAF and RCAF nose markings a photo caption which says they were to indicate the seat as armoured (admitedly in respect of a photo of a lancaster)....so the question(s)
- is that fact or fiction?
- if it is fact and given that all mossies had the same (= armoured) seat why waste the time and effort (paint etc etc) to so mark them?
if you can direct us to any authoritative document it would be especially appreciated.
cheers
