This is just a supposition, but perhaps if they were gas detectors, it was for carbon manoxide. I have never heard of this mind you, but it seems the most practical thing to detect, if indeed they were gas detectors. As we all know, there were a number of aircraft which suffered from carbon monoxide poisoning issues (two which spring to mind are the corsair and typhoon).
