Hi Denys,
Obviously you've made some progress since I last saw '339 and its seats. I seem to remember that we thought (or was it just Anth?) that they were gas patches which makes more sense than "this seat is armoured" which would be obvious fairly fast I would have thought. In the latest 'Aeroplane' there is mention of them discovering a yellow diamond under the (re) paint of the FAA Museum's Corsair and having it chemically analysed to prove it was a gas detection patch. Maybe that's an option?
Is there a patch on the BACK of the pilot's seat? If so, this would probably be visible to the nav who could warn the pilot that there was a CO leak or whatever and to stay on oxygen. If it was only on the front of the seats then it would likely be obscured by the crew and their chutes.
An interesting question.
Jim
