Interesting quote from Mustangs Mustangs site...

from a fine book about 7th Fighter Command, "The Pineapple Air Force", page 199 :

Lieut. Col. James W. Bothwell, C.O., 456th FS :" In December 1945, the last of us were getting ready to leave Iwo Jima. I was given command of the 21st FG and told to select the best remaining Mustangs. We went up and down the lines of P-51s of the 15th, 21st and 506th and started any of them that looked like they would not fall apart. We picked up the best of the lot, about 40 aircrafts, and flew them to Tinian. The rest were pushed into a big ditch and covered over with volcanic ash".

Maybe some wrecks to recover over there, what do you think?

End Quote

Does anyone know if Iwo Jima has seen much development since the war? Are such sites likely to be intact or covered in hotels?
