From what I've heard about Iwo, is that it is now occupied by a few Marines and a few Japanese soldiers. One of the airports is still capable of being used but thats it. I also believe that unless you are part of that tour group, you have to get special permission to set foot on the island. It is basically considered an 8 square mile sacred ground which is very good. This would also prevent anyone from poking around for some buried Mustangs.

It would be interesting to see how the airframes have held up underneath the volcanic ash. I'm not sure about the salt air getting to them.
