Although the issue has basically been laid to rest, with the information regarding the refusal by the US Govt. to allow any searches, there is another fact that has to be taken into consideration:

Iwo Jima is one of the Volcanic Islands; as a matter of fact, Mt. Suribachi is an extinct volcano. The volcanic ash and sand, are rich in minerals and in sulphur and its compounds. What type of chemical reactions would the contact of sulphides and for example, the magnesium of the rivets, cause? What about with aluminum?

I don't think that much would have survived, but . . . not until someone finds out for sure . . . on the other hand, albeit Iwo was all of it a battlefield, history and the passing of time have allowed other generations, to dig places where battles or civilizations once took place, and whatever remains have been in some cases, even taken to museums! Now this practice is not as common, I gather.

What would be the way to do this, while at the same time maintaining the appropriate level of respect that those fallen there deserve?
