I think accurate fiberglass replicas, like the Spitfires in the UK, are a better choice for pedestal aircraft. They are far more easier to move when necessary and they are easier to repair and maintain.

There are a lot of authentic warbirds sitting on pedestals out there and they are just slowly rotting away.

: As a footnote to the discussion below about the getting th

: Perhaps once the Lancaster is down we can turn our attenti
: on to some of these others, like the Sabres and the CF-100
: s to start, and the DC-3s as well.
:
: I guess when these aircraft are retired, putting them on p
: edestals seems like a great idea, but as they age, and the
: men who flew them age, their heritage value increases. S
: eems like many of these should be down, away from the sun,
: the rain, the vandals and the pigeons. Maybe we could ev
: en get some vintage jets back in the skies over Canada. P
: ersonally, I'm too young to have remember seeing Sabres, b
: ut I'd love to see one at an airshow somewhere.
:
: Just a thought. A campaign to get all of these under cove
: r and into restoration. At least we know where they all a
: re, and they are in better shape than old crashes and plan
: es dug out of swamps.
:
: And I'm sure there are hundreds more perched on pedestals
: around the world. It is not a uniquely Canadian thing to
: do.
