Planes on Pedestals

As a footnote to the discussion below about the getting the Canadian pedestal mounted Lancaster under cover, here is a interesting website, with pictures of pedestal mounted aircraft all over Canada.

Perhaps once the Lancaster is down we can turn our attention to some of these others, like the Sabres and the CF-100s to start, and the DC-3s as well.

I guess when these aircraft are retired, putting them on pedestals seems like a great idea, but as they age, and the men who flew them age, their heritage value increases. Seems like many of these should be down, away from the sun, the rain, the vandals and the pigeons. Maybe we could even get some vintage jets back in the skies over Canada. Personally, I'm too young to have remember seeing Sabres, but I'd love to see one at an airshow somewhere.

Just a thought. A campaign to get all of these under cover and into restoration. At least we know where they all are, and they are in better shape than old crashes and planes dug out of swamps.

And I'm sure there are hundreds more perched on pedestals around the world. It is not a uniquely Canadian thing to do.
