The organisation does not necessarily need to have charitable status (this can be a hinderence sometimes) but it does show to larger organisation (namely RAFM) that it is a serious project. It would mean that they could offer more 'official' help.

Ownership by the organisation and not a single person is also more advisable (which will have to happen to Black Magic sooner rather than later). Again this can cause different problems because the organisation has to agree as a whole unit on what will happen during and after the project. It does mean that other organisations and companies seem to be more willing to help with expertise and/or equipment and/or hard cash if it is owned by an organisation.
