Australian built P-51 registration

This is completely untrue! Australian built Mustang's MUST be registered as Experimental Exhibition per the applicable regulations, and do so using their original ID.
That being said, there are workarounds to some of these regulations, and losing the original ID is one of the results of using a workaround. This public forum is probably not a good place to discuss these however...
I think that you will find the same situation if you were to look into the Canadian Car and Foundry Harvard registry vs. the North American built T-6/SNJ registry over the years, so this situation is far from limited to Australian Mustangs.
