In a dry sump lubrication system there are always scavenge pumps in the low end of the engine. In an inverted installation you would need to scavenge the rocker covers as well since you can?t just let them fill up.
When the BBMF PR.19's were converted to take the single stage supercharged Griffon 58 the air intake ducting had to be modified. This was probably less complicated than the conversion You think of but, why not. The position of the air intake on the covling of a one-o-nine is quite high up, isn?t it?
Maybe You should be looking for a Merlin fitted with a down-draught carb rather than an up-draught.
