Joe,
Happy to stand corrected on this one but the number that comes to my mind was an 'on the books' price of ?100,000 per conversion and that was 10-15 years ago. Of course that may have been the accountants figures and an internal 'wooden dollars' number, as we used to say in the motor industry.
As an aside, I suspect that new technology could not be cost effectively applied to the design and specification of components for 'new' engines, such as the Merlin, here in the UK. In the current climate, if a 'new' builder were to deviate from the original specification, I suspect he would be drowned in support paperwork, design studies, calculations, and test procedures etc, however logical and proven the deviation technology might be.
