Funnu\y you should mentionthis I know of at least 1 case where this has already happened, in the late 60's MG made two alloy bodied special MGC GTs known as GTS or more generally known as the Sebring MGs MBL546 and RMO699.

After Leyland gave up racing they were sold and for many years RMO was considered written off in the mid 80's a pile of parts, allegedly from the wrecked RMO turned up and were "dataplated" and had the RMO699 registration awarded to it as well.

In the late 80's the genuine RMO699 turned up intact (it had been briefly used as a road car before being stored for years after breaking down).

There have been other cases, I think several of the Jaguar XKSS' and D types have swapped parts and identities a few times over the years and I'm pretty sure that some of the Auto Union bits that have been restored from bits liberated from the Former Soviet Union (it's not just Messerschmitts that come of there you know..) have also had a pretty muddled (but authentic) provendence.

Tom
