Hi all,

I know its off topic, but as a self confessed Jaguar nut, I couldn't not post a reply...sorry!!

The Jaguar D-type carries the data plate on the tub, there is only a serial number stamped on the tube frame section, usually found on the passenger side front shock absorber mount, it starts in XKD for D-type or XKSS for the XKSS. The data plate carried on the car is a standard Jaguar dataplate that is cut in half with unnecessay information (steering box, etc) removed. This is the part that carries the identity of the car.

But...

There was a Jaguar D-type, XKD513, I believe, that was split and two cars rebuilt, one in the US one in the UK. The US car had the frame but more importantly it had the dataplate. The original tub had been written of and sold to a collector in the UK who the other car built around it. When the inevitable identity question was raised, Jaguar were consulted, and they gave the same answer as when they had rebuilt crashed 'Works' cars in the late 1950's. If the pieces are replaced with a genuine part of no known or assigned ID, and the car retains its Data Plate, then the part that has been removed has no claim to that number.

Of course, since then both XKD513's were bought by one person and all the original parts put on one car and the replacements on the other......
