Hi Ross,

Interesting question,

But first I would like to say:

Get that Fiat BR20 out of the Med, at all costs!!!!!!!
It's unique and would fill a very imporant gap in any collection (especially if Italian aviation history is concerned)

What should we consider and what timescale?

Well, I think that anything could be considered, if you look into the reports FlyPast used to publish annually about what had been preserved in the previous year this also included relatively modern aircraft or equipment.

Personally I think it is a case of who is interested in what. There are people who are only interested in WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam or the Gulf War. It's all a matter of taste. But these various tasted combined form a comprehensive picture of aviation of the last century.

If you look at the WIX, the main focus of interest is piston engined aircraft with people interested in recovering/restoring/preserving/flying/maintaining all sorts of types, with also various "sidesteps" into jets etc. This ensures that there is variety en as such there is always something discussed that attracts several people.

If a crated and preserved Merlin or constant speed prop was trawled up, then the first question I would ask is: where does it come from, and second because it's part of the history of the aircraft as flown during WWII and it's derivatives postwar, it would make a very valuable exhibit displayed next to the remains of a crashed aircraft, or a restored static one.

Cheers

Cees
