Tony,
This is getting more and more interesting by the minute.
OK, I assumed that they had already finished the new tailplane and fitted it to HR792 when I saw the photographs as posted some weeks ago.
I was wrong.
Looking at your photo's again I noticed a wing under construction in front of the Anson. I thought it was made of wood first and assumed it to be the one from the Anson. Looking at it again it seems to be of metal and primered. The hinge sticking out looks like a Halifax hinge and based on this I assume (again) that this is the new metal tailplane for HR792. Why then does it take them some two years to build a tailplane when they recreated a Halifax in a bit more time (sort of).
If you look closely at the photo's of the wings in the Queen Mary you see the camouflage and the roundel. Well, the camouflage matches the camouflage of HR792 (too light green and brown). What I find strange is that I don't seem to notice the flaps or the lack of recesses in the wing trailing edge to fit them into, so this puzzles me (you too?) quite a bit. But, they are large enough to fit to HR792 and I cannot think of another aircraft large enough to need outer wings with the same camouflage as HR792.
The vertical fins of the aircraft were made by BAe at Brough and looked to be made from aluminium ( I have a video of the reconstruction of "Freddy" and footage is shown how the fins are being fitted etc).
" To the untrained eye, I do not think that this would be
: noticed. "
To the trained eye this would stick out like a sore thumb.
Generally spoken (my words at least), she needs quite some more (or renewed) effort to finish her and to make her resemble a Halifax even better than she is doing now. As you mention the whole feeling of tiredness of the airframe is very evident.
Points of interest:
-tailplane (OK we know they are working on that)
-outer wings (well according to Tony's photo's, it looks like they are attempting to do something about that as well)
-engines/exhausts/collector rings/wrong propellors (don't know their plans on that)
-nose glazing (I know they are working on that one too)
Cheers
Cees
