It is a pity it cannot be stopped. I have seen a Napier Sabre and it is a beautiful piece of engineering, it must be heartbreaking that there is nothing that can be done.
I did hear of some form of chemical 'dip' where they have the metal object up to electrodes, and force the salt out. A bit like making a giant battery.
I think someone in the US did this with a Zero rear fuselage a few years ago, but I'd have to check.
Still, I suppose there's plenty of things to amuse ourselves with in fresh water....
