Tom -
My experience with salt water wrecks is very much like Cees' - washing out the salt with fresh water is a time consuming process and hardly definitive. The RE 2001 sheet metal was largely replaced, whereas most of the solid/machined parts fared well; the engine was restored but the corrosion is now popping up again just as described by Cees for the Sabre. Same on the C202.
Plaese don't drag me into the Anzio P-40 discussion. The airframe was spectacularly washed out, then hastily reassembled with pop rivets to get it on display ASAP. It is corroding slowly in public view, somewhat camouflaged by the low lighting levels in the display hall. 'Nuff said, today is the last time I will touch upon that particular P-40.
By the way - which Fiat G.46 are you talking about?
Gregory
