Here's my take...if anyone is interested. Warbirds have been rebuilt in stages. In the early sixties they were souped up sport planes. The seventies began a slow drive to at least paint them somewhat accurately...but there was still alot of chrome going on...at least here in the US. The eighties really saw the historical value rise and the "standards" in authentic restorations kicked up a notch. I think Kermit Weeks is partially responsible for this trend in the U.S.. The nineties really saw some beautiful restorations emerge that has rolled over into the new century.
As far as standards are concerned...all of them have to be airworthy and up to code. Radioes, armor, guns, paint...are all extras. I think the British have lead in this field for years. U.S. restorers have only really done this as a customer demands. Warbirds have always been seen as an investment in the U.S.,..but now I think they are taking to the trend of the classic car arena. Authentically restored...no matter how painstaking it is.
What I think is the next step in restoration is having warbirds not polished out...just bare natural aluminum, more authentic paint schemes, more reproductions, and more sub assembly shops...as money and economy permit. What I don't see is alot of younger owners to pick up the ball. Most warbird owners now are in thier 50's and 60's ...being 31 isn't easy on the pocketbook these days ;P let alone funding a warbird.
