Christer, teccie question

This weekend I was reading about the development of the Merlin and Griffon Spits. Regarding the conversion of the Spitfire with the two-stage 2050 hp Griffon it was stated that performance improved dramatically with speeds in exccess of 445 mph.

At the end of the war there have been Merlins that were capable of over 2000 hp. I can imagine that such a Merlin would be lighter than a Griffon with the same horspower.

Now I am not a technical wizzard but I was wondering if theoretically speaking if you fit such a high powered engine to a Mk XIV airframe, would the maximum speed be much higher considering the lesser drag and weight of the resulting aircraft as opposed to a standard Mk XIV?

And why have no Spitfire airframes been used to compete at Reno (other than TZ138 which was a fairly standard airframe)? A high powered Merlin-engined Spitfire would be a very competetive airframe being lighter and smaller than the Mustangs and Seafuries don't you think?
