Wouldn't an HA-1112 (Buchon) be even faster than either a Mustang or a Merlin Spitfire? It is smaller and lighter than either!

: This weekend I was reading about the development of the M
: erlin and Griffon Spits. Regarding the conversion of the S
: pitfire with the two-stage 2050 hp Griffon it was stated t
: hat performance improved dramatically with speeds in excce
: ss of 445 mph.
:
: At the end of the war there have been Merlins that were ca
: pable of over 2000 hp. I can imagine that such a Merlin wo
: uld be lighter than a Griffon with the same horspower.
:
: Now I am not a technical wizzard but I was wondering if th
: eoretically speaking if you fit such a high powered engine
: to a Mk XIV airframe, would the maximum speed be much hig
: her considering the lesser drag and weight of the resultin
: g aircraft as opposed to a standard Mk XIV?
:
: And why have no Spitfire airframes been used to compete at
: Reno (other than TZ138 which was a fairly standard airfra

: y competetive airframe being lighter and smaller than the
: Mustangs and Seafuries don't you think?
