In reply top chinese spitfires............... posted by simon king on Tue Oct 23, 2001 05:33:09 PM

Hi Simon.

I started off the thread at the WW forum some time ago after reading the aircraft listing for the Chinese Nationalists @

http://www.worldairforces.com/Countries/china/nch.html

It appears to be a full list with many surprises, not least the Spitfire Mk V's, of which they are said to have had "some".

I got a reply to my original post from someone from Air Britain, who said that they have a book in preparation to be named Spitfire International.

Since then I have had a long phone conversation with a well known Spitfire personality who is supplying a lot of the photos for the book. And he told me that the book has been about six months from publication for about five years now !
He himself didn't have any information on Chinese Spitfires other than what the writers had told him, and to be frank, I don't think he actually believed the Chinese had any, but if they did then they would most likely have come from Russia.

The strange thing about it though, why would the Commie Russians give Spitfires to the Nationalist Chinese and not their mates....the Red Chinese.....doesn't make sense to me, unless the Nationalists captured them somewhere ?

I suppose , like most things in the aviation world, we will have to wait for concrete confirmation of their service with the Chinese or not, ie; PHOTOS, or someone spilling the beans.

I am of course in no position to say if they had any or not, but I keep an open mind though on this and most things.........

within reason, wink wink.

Never say never...that's what I always say anyway, there's still lots of surprises out there for us I'm sure...it's only recently I found out the Norway had a Hurricane Mk IIC LF575, in Norwegian markings, right up until it was scrapped in 1951....this info thanks to Our Tony.

Just because we haven't seen it written over and over in books and mags, over many years, it doesn't mean it never happened.

I wonder if Our Will in Taiwan could find a veteran who fought with the Chinese Nationalists.....you never know what might turn up...he might even tell us where the Nationalists hid a cache of rare and interesting old aeros !?

TTFN
Mick

PS; What modelling book was it Simon....any pics or profiles ?
