In reply top Andy Saunders - Grave robber? Oh ye of little faith! posted by PeterA on Fri Jul 05, 2002 05:43:22 AM

The apology was issued by Brighton and Hove Newspaper Group.

Andrew Saunders: An apology
In some editions of Tuesday's Argus, our story about Andrew Saunders, of St Mary's Road, Hastings, was inaccurately headlined "Expert admits grave theft".

Mr Saunders, HAVING PLEADED GUILTY TO A TECHNICAL OFFENCE (In other words, he pleaded guilty to a lesser charge) of removing the remains of an aircraft without a licence, was exonerated by His Honour Judge Rennie of any dishonesty and, in fact, was praised by the judge for his sterling efforts over the last 30 years in repatriating lost airmen with their surviving families.

Mr Saunders received a conditional discharge and a defendant's costs order.

We apologise for the inaccuracies and any embarrassment caused to Mr Saunders.

So a nice result for Mr. Saunders. So , does this sterling effort, encompass the "Nice Bits" from mid-air collisions and the like, that he was advertising on Barnstormers and his own aero jumble site?

Just in case you didn't realise Peter, MOD are loath to bring cases to court or defend them, that they think they can't win. They thought they had enough to go with in this case, but they lost.

There are others , that do sterling work, in aircraft recoveries and aircrew remains, many of them post on this board. However, I don't see them advertising a dozen times in one day on the Barnstormers board, selling bits of aircraft that men died in.

That is my personal feeling, I was not in court, I don't know what Mr. Saunders defence, or the prosecution case was.

Well, it will be interesting to see how MOD deal with the next case they come across

Tony
