: The apology was issued by Brighton and Hove Newspaper Grou
: p.
:
:
: Andrew Saunders: An apology
: In some editions of Tuesday's Argus, our story about Andre
: w Saunders, of St Mary's Road, Hastings, was inaccurately
: headlined "Expert admits grave theft".
:
: Mr Saunders, HAVING PLEADED GUILTY TO A TECHNICAL OFFENCE
: (In other words, he pleaded guilty to a lesser charge) of
: removing the remains of an aircraft without a licence, was
: exonerated by His Honour Judge Rennie of any dishonesty a
: nd, in fact, was praised by the judge for his sterling eff
: orts over the last 30 years in repatriating lost airmen wi
: th their surviving families.
:
: Mr Saunders received a conditional discharge and a defenda
: nt's costs order.
:
: We apologise for the inaccuracies and any embarrassment ca
: used to Mr Saunders.
:
: So a nice result for Mr. Saunders. So , does this sterling
: effort, encompass the "Nice Bits" from mid-air collision
: s and the like, that he was advertising on Barnstormers an
: d his own aero jumble site?
:
: Just in case you didn't realise Peter, MOD are loath to br
: ing cases to court or defend them, that they think they ca
: n't win. They thought they had enough to go with in this c
: ase, but they lost.
:
: There are others , that do sterling work, in aircraft reco
: veries and aircrew remains, many of them post on this boar
: d. However, I don't see them advertising a dozen times in
: one day on the Barnstormers board, selling bits of aircraf
: t that men died in.
:
: That is my personal feeling, I was not in court, I don't k
: now what Mr. Saunders defence, or the prosecution case was
: .
:
: Well, it will be interesting to see how MOD deal with the
: next case they come across

Hi Board,
As a personal view I have always thought it incorrect to sell items from crash sites, the majority of the time the aircrew were killed in the crash, I find it sad to go to jumbles and see the crash bits on sale.
I can see the point of collecting bits for museum/memorial displays / rebuilds etc, but otherwise, It is like a ship or u-boat, a war grave, albeit with no headstone at site, the way a lot of the a/c burnt there is probably very little in the official graves of the aircrew.
The MOD originally owned the a/c so perhaps when granting these permissions for recovery it should be included that no parts should be sold for gain, and this signed to be agreed with, or no permission.
Just my personal thoughts.
cheers
Jerry
