: Strange as it may seem I agree with you!

I never that otherwise :)

:I will ask you a
: question then - if someone comes along and builds a Harpoo
: n from total scratch and says it is the same as yours (whi
: ch clearly has not been built from scratch) you would agre
: e with them?

Nope, that would be a replica. (Not that anyone would be that insane :)) As I said in the previous message, new build airplanes are replicas, but if an airplane is built out of partially old parts and (and I really don't care how many or what percent) and some new and has a dataplate, its the real thing.

: I have said many times we must accept that major structure
: has to be replaced if we are going to keep warbirds airwo
: rthy. In some cases manufacturers spares are available (T-
: 6 as an example, plus Hunters, F-86s etc).
:
: All I have said I DISAGREE with is someone building someth
: ing from zero and then representing it as a far more histo
: rical piece with provenance than it really is.

I also agree with that. I also don't really see anyone doing that. I get around a lot, and know a lot of people in this business, and I can't put my finger on anyone trying to represent a new build airplane as the real thing Maybe it just goes unsaid because most people know that a new Mustang or Spitfire restoration these days is generally built of new metal.

: It is fact though that photographs of a restoration, origi
: nal documents etc etc are often presented by entrants to t
: he EAA Warbird awards.

Yep, and the last few years have demonstrated that more an more of the structure is being replaced in each new restoration, for safety and longevity issues.
