Cees,
I remembered having read about this somewhere and found it in "Spitfire" of the "Warbirds Today Series":
A Belgian scrap dealer (Dewachter) had NH904 with its wings hacked of on his roof at the yard. A british car dealer (Brooks) bought the fuselage and shipped it to England. The wingless aircraft became a local joke and Brooks searched for a complete mainplane. MoD put RM694 up for sale, Brooks bought it and mated its wings to the fuselage of NH904.
This was in the sixties and he payed the handsome sum of ?250 for RM694. Since he had payed the same amount for the fuselage of NH904 he probably considered the latter purchase a real dream deal!
The wingless RM694 ended up in the US and its wings with NH904 went via the Strathallan Collection to Spencer Flack who had it rebuilt to flying condition. It was later sold to Bob Pond?s Planes of Fame East Museum.

Regards,
Christer
