Surely the only reason that anyone would expend all that time and money to recover and "restore" (ie: quietly throw away 99% of it during the process )a wrecked aircraft is to get a legitimate title to that aircraft. Are they not just doing it to avoid being saddled with the replica tag and re the original question, keeping the CAA/FAA off their back? Net result - exactly the same as your data plate job. Or do you really believe that anything being recovered 60 years after the war just needs a couple of new skins and a dab of paint? Like it or not you are talking about a new aircraft. I think you are being conned by those who would like you to think that they have restored something and not by anyone who has the honesty to say "yes - its basically a new plane"
