Regarding conrods, an automotive V-engine has two "blade" conrods which means that the opposing cylinders are slightly staggered.
A "blade" and a "fork" (as in feeding tool) give exactly opposing cylinders. The "fork" is clamped to the crankshaft and the "blade" is clamped to the center of the "fork", between the two pins of the "fork". (Am I clear as mud now?)
Another advantage is that loads on the crankpin is always centralized.
Regarding the firing order, I have no facts but I shouldn?t think so. Designers are always experimenting with firing orders to acchieve smoothness. If I find something out I?ll get back on that one!
