First production Whirlwind, one of 8 in service, but not operational with 263Sqn.
Only Whirlwind to go down during the Battle of Britain on Wednesday August 7th 1940.
Burst a tyre on take-off and UC visibly damaged, advised to bail out.
Crashed at Lanton Farm, Stenhousemuir, near Stirling, Scotland.
PO I.M.McDermott baled out slightly injured, circled by a Spitfire while coming down to earth (!), aircraft a write off.......you don't say !!!???
RAF spent two days trying to dig it out of the hole but not much success.
Recovered on October 13th 1979 by Steve Vizard,Terry Parsons,Tony Graves,Andy Saunders,John Ellis and Peter Foote (Bf109E owner, as was).
One Peregrine found with prop blades attached, wing panels and cowlings, and engine parts at 8ft deep.
Fuel tanks,an oil cooler, fire extinguisher and complete UC leg with tyre found next.
Second engine found in superb condition.
Eventual hole was 25ft deep by 30ft square.
No word if the ID plate was found, but apparently "all major components and equipment" were, whatever that means?
Suitable ID for rebuild anybody ??
Tony Dyer was going after the drawings, any luck TonyD ?
