That pretty much sums it up. Compound all of that with, intergranualr corrosion from salt water submersion, and being hauled up in a fishing net and you can under stand why these two planes were recovered as little more than the center section chunk that they were.
From what I understand, fishing vessels off the coast of Queensland have been hauling up little bits and pieces of Corsairs, F6F's, etc from that area for decades. Chances seem good that any part protruding from the remains on the bottom has most likely been ripped off during the last 50+ years by the countless fishing nets that have passed over that area. Still, I'd give my eye teeth to see some underwater video of the 'field of warbirds' scattered along the bottom :)
