Obviously ANN has never heard of the North American Aviation O-47... and thinks they have discovered a P-47!
Missing Since Before Pearl Harbor
Wreckage of U.S. Plane Found in Panama
We heard over the weekend that a USAAF airplane, listed in the report we read as an "O-47 fighter," was found in Panama, in the Valle de Anton, fewer than 70 miles west of Panama City, in rugged, near-vertical, jungle terrain.
The history of the aircraft indicates that it was the one that left Rio Hato airbase on June 8, 1941, and disappeared. Although months of searching turned up nothing, hope remained for the crew; after December 7, 1941, resources were redeployed, and the search was essentially abandoned.
A team from the Army's Central Identification Laboratory has been at the site for over a month, and has recovered bone fragments believed to be human.
The reports we've gotten are somewhat garbled, e.g., the reference to the "O-47." Since "O" is really close to "P" on the typewriter keyboard, we think we have things figured out. When there's an official report, we'll try to get a hold of it. Currently, there is no reference to any CILHI mission in Panama, on the official website.
