Paul,
an electronic ignition device will need battery power to work.
A magneto works independantly from the electrical system, well, you don?t even need one if the engine can be cranked manually.
A modern electronic ignition device is almost maintenance free while a magneto needs constant fiddling to work properly.
Pros and cons ...... if the fiddling is successful I?ll opt for the magneto, if it?s not I?ll hope that the electrical system is in better shape than the mechanic and opt for the mainenance free modernities.
When it comes to mods of aircraft engines there is the CAA, FAA or any other national authority who probably would cause your mechanic to have a mag drop ......
