Actually W3761 Failed To Return from ops on Aug 19 (not 9th) 1942. This was the Dieppe Raid (Operation Jubilee)... A very big Canadian link there..
Anyway this 71 Sqn Spitfire Vb machine was being flown by F/O M G McPharlin and he baled out and was rescued.
This aircraft was also damaged when with the Polish 315 Sqn on the 24th October 1941, when piloted by the P/O Fiedorczuk, who was wounded. This was aircraft was on an afternoon sweep to the French coast and the pilot was seriously wounded in combat with Messerschmitt Bf109's. The aircraft was Cat 2 damaged but subsequenly returned to service. See Above!
