a quick google bought this up which might be what you saw anyway - stripping Spits for usable parts. Also in there is intersting reference to Typhoons - I thought only a couple reached the middle east for trials.
Seems to have been a busy FAF base during the 50s and 60s with Skyraiders and latterly Fouga magisters
probably doesn't help
