I'll agree it's not entirely out the realm of possibilities. However, to me it would not have made much sense to use this type of aircraft for such a purpose. Firstly, why go to the expense to get an airframe that old into flightworthy condition? It would have definately attracted enough attention to those in the (small) warbird community when unfamiliar individuals started looking for parts or for an engine rebuild. Also, they had newer and certainly more reliable hardware at their disposal. And the costs involved could pay for a small fleet of used Cessnas, which could potentially be used more effectively over a wider area. Secondly, a thundering warbird over a populated area would certainly get attention, esp. if anyone noticed it being equipped with spray bars (crop dusters excluded, perhaps.) Most of the time, a small, inconspicuous GA aircraft would not get a second look from those on the ground.
As for a battlefield scenario, it would seem like a last-ditch effort to use it. A bombardment of missles or artillary would be more effective. (And how long would any aircraft, except for a fast jet, survive flying over a bunch of p****d off marines with 30mm, .50 calibers and close-air support at the ready?)
