For the most part, I agree with you Scott. However, I think that the final decision lays with those who were close to the pilot. In the case of Rolls-Royce Spit XIV, the family gave permission to rebuild the aircraft. That's the way to go. If the family says no, just leave it alone. It also depends if the aircraft is rebuildable or not. A lump of melted Alclad is useless.

The most touching hommage ever give to a pilot was this one: here in Qu?bec a guy had disappeared like 18 years ago with his Cessna. When they found him, they melted the plane and made an urn in which to put his ashes. That was very touching from the family's part...
