I understand what Mr. Coggan is looking for but I don't think the nature of warbirds allows such classification without have nearly as many clasifications as extant airframes.

I think the majority of airframes would fit into the categories I listed. What is required (and I agree with some of the comments Tony made earlier) is a realignment of views.

Is it so bad to own a reconstruction or replica? My beef is that very often the story changes when aircraft change owners - I don't know why but it does.

No one is trying to decry the efforts of anyone here, everything that flies is great but some projects enter into the spirit of restoration more than others -- is it fair to say to a guy that has gone to the trouble of recovering and restoring a warbird that his aircraft is the same as the one that has been from the dataplate upwards?

To me the whole spirit is starting with something meaningful and restoring it (no matter how much is replaced) or rebuilding or reworking it. It is also very worthy when someone creates an aircraft from scratch. But it is IMHO UNWORTHY when they pretend it is something it is NOT........
