I remember that issue. I'll bet that same photo could be found on the web with a little searching. It was quite a disheartening shot to say the least! A pile of P-38's about four or five planes high, and all were brand new with gleaming polished metal - right off the boat apparently. I believe they were stacked and burned.

If I remember correctly, there was also a photo of B-29's in the same condition getting the same treatment.
