Nobody is going to want to hear this, but here it goes...
CRASHES! Insurance costs and public opinion are driven by this. Injuries and fatalities drive the cost of insurance up, and public opinion is based on what is seen in the news media. Not just warbirds, but all non-commercial (i.e. general aviation) aircraft. Without getting into specifics, hardly a month goes by without two or three light aircraft fatalities being reported in the news here in Los Angeles.
The general public sees light aircraft as very, very dangerous. most of my non-aviation oriented friends and family wonder why I would risk my life committing aviation.
Naturally, most of these accidents are preventable and are caused by bad judgement. I've had bad judgement on occasion as a pilot, luckily nothing much came of it. Now I'm much more careful.
