If the guys who saw it could be contacted again the question if the two seats were arranged side by side or not. If side by side = B? 181 (or Bf 108) and tandem it could be an Ar 96. I assume it was a low winged aircraft.
It seems like the "treasure in the barn" discovery still can be done.
A two seater trainer in german markings could also be a Texan trainer from post WWII(Would be exciting for you Benno! ;-).
