I too second Johns notes, well, not all of them.
"4) I always wipe my drive and rebuild it every 3-6 months as Windows aquires so much crap in day to day use that it is slowed down considerably within this timeframe. I find my system is much better ever time I do this."
I wiped my WinME system to migrate to WinXPpro. It took me three evenings to get it installed, updated and in full working order with all applications. I certainly don?t want to do that too often.
That was three months ago and the size of the system partition was 2.73GB. Today the size is 2.77GB and I know exactly what those 0.04GB are. Maybe WinXP is better in this respect than earlier operating systems.
Norton Ghost is a jewel, I had it create Images of the system partition during the installation and I transfered them to CDs. The first with Windows and Office installed. The second with all applications, except anti virus and firewall. The third including anti virus and firewall.
This makes it possible for me to "roll back" to any of these states. E.g. if I want to install a new application I "roll back" to the second Image w/o anti virus and firewall and when the new application is there I reinstall anti virus and firewall.
I have a fourth Image on a different partition than the system partition. This Image is replaced when I feel that it should be to keep it up-to-date. If a virus should sneak its way in, I wouldn?t bother with anything but go get my Ghost start disk and restore the system partition from the Image on E:.
That?s my way and everyone has his or her own!
Regards,
Christer
