I wish them luck since they are trying to preserve at least one example to help promote the history of the Berlin Airlift. I still think it's a shame to have to destroy one rare airframe simply to keep another of the same type airworthy. If that were a common act, I'd seriously have to reconsider my values. IMO there are more considerate ways to procure a couple of extra engines and some spares without completely destroying a historic aircraft in the process.
In terms of preservation, I'd be curious to know how many folks think that it's worth destroying one complete, static airframe in order to help another static airframe back to airworthy condition. Is that a logical trade?
And can anyone tell me about the "Moses Lake" C-97? I hear its being offered for $8500!
