Hi Elwyn, Ahh, you've opened old sores concerning the PBM! Although initially quite intact, BuNo 59172 became the victim of a botched attempt by the US Navy in 1996 to raise her (experienced divers--but not at recovering large aircraft from lake-bottom muck). The recovery team basically succeeded in breaking her in two. I recall reading the comments of a recreational diver since then--I believe what's left is quite buried, inverted, in the muck; and obviously the Naval Historical Center won't let the private sector recover what's left.
