An engine that back-fires, ignites the fuel in the induction manifold. This can be due to a combination of faulty valve timing and ignition timing. I don?t know about Allisons but Merlins and Griffons have flame traps in the induction manifold to prevent the supercharger from exploding if things really should go wrong.

When the throttle is closed rapidly, there can be a spluttering noise from the exhaust manifold. This is not back-firing (not against the normal gas flow in the engine) and is due to the mixture getting too rich when the throttle is closed rapidly. The fuel measuring system doesn?t react quickly enough and under such conditions the fuel hasn?t burned out when the exhaust valves open and with the added oxygen in the air the remaining fuel burns with a splutter.

Christer,
hoping he?s right since this is what happens in highly tuned race cars
