Slides typically scan much better then negatives and prints, the color saturation and fine grain generally found with your slide films lead to very sharp and vibrant scans. Most of the shots from the last couple of years on my site were taken on slide film and scanned.

When scanning negatives you want to make sure you are scanning film with an ISO of 200 or slower, or you may get noise from the film grain.

The healing brush in Photoshop 7 is absolutely amazing for correcting dust specks on scans, I'd definitely recommend on getting it if you are going to be doing a lot of scanning and correction.
