Lancaster v Halifax or if you prefer, Halifax v Lancaster

Hi all,
Am I right in saying that the Hercules engined Halifax outperformed the Merlin engined Halifax and that the Merlin engined Lancaster, outperformed the Hercules engined Lancaster.
If this is correct, why would a Hercules engine perform well on one type of airframe, but not on the other?
IIRC, both airframes had a closely related empty weight and I would have assumed that a Merlin powered Halifax would have had a similar performance to a Merlin powered Lancaster?
Is the difference down to engine performance, aerodynamics or was there no actual no difference?
Tony
