Tony,
Well, the entire operation was done through the Dutch AF recovery team, and contacts between Holland and the UK through official channels at high air force level as well. So I think the British MOD knew and are probably instrumental in the donation of the 14 tons of wreckage (minus some small parts in our museum and another one in Holland which were "kindly" donated to us by the RNethAF) to Wickenby.
However, during a recent meeting with the recovery officer who was in charge of the operation he felt it was a mistake to have done that, now knowing that the parts were to be sold. According to the FlyPast articel, there were even children's clothing and toys among the wreckage. And when I was there during the recovery they were so proud to have a huge sifting machine on site in which they claimed the smallest items could be recovered. Hmmmmmmm.
Mind you, the whole operation was a PR-job resulting from the need to recover the wreck to enable the port of Amsterdam to be enlarged. No human feelings at all, just economical ones.
I think I have said enough about this.
Cees
