You are correct about that, in fact there are some four or five Spitfire IX replica's dotted around the country, excluding the two full size replica's in private hands.

Once I heard a rumour that there was some flap in Air Force circles why/what did it cost/who's responsible etc.

At least Eindhoven, Deelen, Soesterberg (as well as a fibreglass prop hanging on a fence as some sort of memorial) have one, and these things are not cheap.
